Absolution of a Priest. The excellency of this power above the power of Angels and Princes. What is to loose and bind.

Abstinence. See Fasting.

Adoration of God, Latria; and adoration of creatures, Dulia. Adoration of the Ark, Crucifix, Images, Relics, and the like. of Angels, Saints, and holy persons, S. John's adoring of the Angel explicated. What is, to adore in spirit and truth, Reverence to holy persons, even to the kissing of their feet.

Alleluia. and Not to be translated. The song both of the Church militant and triumphant. A word of marvelous joy, and so used in the Church's Service, even in the primitive Church. Sung in our country at our first conversion Sung in all Christian Nations. The Protestants had rather say, Praise ye the Lord. In translating six Psalms they have left it out nine times.

Alms redeem sins, &c. They procure us patrons in heaven. release of pains after our death. increase grace. Great Almsmen happy. Alms and hospitality to Priests and other holy men. to Catholic prisoners See Works. The more able, the greater must our alms be. When a man is bound to give alms.

Angels, Protectors of men. of countries, of Churches, The Protestants also hold this against the Puritanes. They help us They offer up our prayers v. S. Catholic. This name discerneth true believers from Heretics. It is the surname of true Christians. By this name, Heretics themselves understand them of the Roman faith. S. Augustin's high estimation of this name. The Protestants mock at this name. So did the Donatists. Some leave it out in the Creed. Some in the titles of the Catholic Epist. The Catholic Epist. why so called ibidem, Catholic terms and speeches. To have Catholic parents is a great blessing. Catholic Church, See Church. Catholic faith. See faith. The Catholic faith is taken from countries for sin. The Catholic simple man is sufficiently learned, Catholic men's obedience to their Pastors. to Councels Catholic assemblies to God's service in time of persecution. See persecution.

Chaste or single life Angelical. more apt for the service of God See Priests, Holy Orders, Monastical life. It is not impossible. The Protestants complain they have not the gift. All may that will Chastity of mind also is required. The Chastity of Virgins, Widows, married folk, differ in merit and dignity.

Christ a Priest as he is man. See Priest, his descending into Hell. See Hell. He is the only Mediator. See Saints. How he maketh now intercession for us. Following of Christ diversly. Christ and Messias and Anointed, all one. His marvelous grace in preaching.

The name of Christians True Christian liberty. See Gospel.

Church the Spouse of Christ, her other titles & prerogatives Christ's exceeding love and benefits toward her. The marvelous union between them. She was builded of Christ's side gathered of all nations Upholden by his continual protection. Catholic or universal. The principal creature. What this article signifieth, I believe the Catholic Church. It is more blindness not to see the Church, than not to believe in Christ Heretics blinder than the Jews. The unity thereof Christ prayed for the unity thereof. His coat without seam a figure thereof. often commended. See Schism. The Protestants at the first avoided the name of Church, and thrust it out of the Bible. It can never fail nor err The Protestants' blasphemy concerning the Church's apostasy and revolt from God. Material Churches. The building of them Dedication of Churches. Cost in adorning them. God will be honoured in them rather than else-where. How he dwelleth not in material Temples. Not to be profaned. Our parents, & other necessities of poor men are sometime to be preferred before the adorning of Churches.

Clergy. The name their difference from the Laity. The manner & dignity of their calling. Degrees of superiority among themselves & over other. Their good life much edifieth. their exemption & privileges. They may not exercise holy functions for filthy lucre.

Commandments, possible to be kept. Keeping the commandments profitable, & necessary to salvation. ma. They differ from Counsels. By keeping of them man is justified. Commandments of men, what they are, & that they make nothing against the Apostles' and Church's traditions. See Tradition. Heretical laws and doctrines are commandments of men.

Communion. The Protestants' Communion. They imitate not in the same Christ's institution ibi. much less the Apostles' traditions. Coming to the Communion against our conscience. They call it unproperly the Communion. and the supper of the Lord. Their communion, bread profane Calvin's bread. It is the very table and cup of Devils. and is accordingly to be abhorred.

Community of life and goods in the first Christians, used now of the Religious only. not a commandment but a counsel only.

Concupiscence after Baptism is of itself no sin without consent. It moveth to sin. How the Apostle calleth it sin. it maketh not all the actions of a just man sins.

Confession in particular Secret or auricular confession to a Priest. of all mortal sins. before the receiving of the B. Sacrament. The English Ministers hear confessions & absolve, against their own doctrine. See Penance.

Confessing of Christ & his religion highly esteemed. See Faith. They that dare not confess and profess the Cath. religion, to whom they are like. To deny that thou art a Catholic, is to deny Christ.

Confirmation otherwise called Bishoping, It is a Sacrament. The grace and effect thereof. The old and new heresies against this Sacrament Chrism or holy oil in confirmation.

Conscience. Doing against our conscience Horror of conscience for shedding innocent blood

Continency. See Chastity. Examples of notable persons that lived continently from wives. The continency of married folk for prayer sake. for the more worthy receiving of the B. Sacrament. perpetual continency of man & wife.

Contrition. See Penance.

Corporals for the B. Sacrament.

Councels Of what persons they consist. They represent the whole Church. Peter & his Successors presidents in Councels. Councels of no force without their confirmation. Controversies in Religion to be decided by Councels. They have the assistance of the Holy Ghost. of Christ. This assistance taketh not away due examination of matters and disputation. All good Christians rest upon their determination How the ancient fathers esteem of general Councels. The decrees of Councels are diligently to be put in execution. and Heretics only blaspheme them, and will not be tried by them. How later Councels alter the former. Heretical or Schismatical synods

Counsels Evangelical. Things not commanded as necessary, but counseled as the better. tending to perfection, followed by religious men See Works of supererogation, Religious.

Cross. The honour of the holy Cross. Called the sign of the Son of man. The sign of the Cross in blessing. In Sacraments, and other hallowed creatures. Why in our forehead. The Crucifix or Rood with Mary and John. The virtue of the sign of the Cross. The appearing thereof at the later day, shall no less confound the Calvinists than the Jews.

Devotion. uttered by external signs See Pilgrimage. God is served and adored in spirit, notwithstanding external devotion. Devotion falsely of the Protestants called superstition. Devotion toward Relics and holy things, a token of greater faith. Holy women's devotion. Mary Magdalen's devotion. Zachaeus devotion toward Christ. Devotion to see and to be near to the B. Sacrament. Kneeling at Verbum caro factum est, and, Et homo factus est &c.

Doctors of the Church. We must have regard to their doctrine. S. Augustine's estimation of the holy Doctors. Their aureola or crown in heaven. The Heretics' contempt of them. See Heretics.

Enoch also yet liveth. and shall preach in Antichrist's time with Elias.

Excommunication, a spiritual punishment. most terrible. When and where to be executed. Excommunicate persons to be avoided. The Heretics use a certain ridiculous excommunication.

Faith See Justification, works. Faith only doth not justify. marg, and S. Augustine's whole book de fide & operibus, against only faith. Only faith an old heresy. S. James calleth such Heretics, vain men, and compareth them to devils. S. Paul's doctrine concerning faith and good works. He often joineth faith and charity. His words of faith, misconstrued by old Heretics and new. other Scriptures falsely alleged for faith only. The Protestants' special faith or vain security of salvation. See Salvation. The Catholic Epistles written against the heresy of only faith. Why faith is so often named in the case of justification. See Justification. In what sense some Fathers say, Only faith, How it is said, Believe only. What manner of faith doth justify. Faith may be had and lost again, which the Protestants deny. So may grace and charity. The Apostle's Analogy or prescript Rule of faith. To hold fast the first received faith of our Apostles and Fathers. and External profession of every point and article of faith. Fear. Many kinds of fear. The justest men do fear. See in F. special faith. & the word salvation. Servile fear not ill, though not sufficient. fear of hell profitable.

Feasts or festival days. prefigurated by the Jews' Feasts Scriptures grossly abused by the Protestants against the Church's Festivities and Holidays. Easter, Whitsuntide. Sunday. called dies Dominica, because of our Lord's Resurrection. Greater grace given upon these solemn days.

Free will, Man's free will worketh with God's grace. God & his grace force no man. God's grace maketh man's will more free. Predestination, reprobation, concupiscence, take not away free will. The Jews' blindness and reprobation was through their own free will. So was their betraying and crucifying of Christ, and Judas treason. the refusing of the Gospel when it is preached.

God, not author of sin. See Reprobation. Free will. The meaning of those places that sound as though God were Author of sin. How the death of Christ was by God's determination. ma.

Gospel. It is not only the written word. See Tradition. The preeminence of the new Testament. The true liberty of the Gospel. He suffereth for the Gospel, that suffereth for any Article of the Catholic faith.

Idols in all the Bible, signify the false gods of the Pagans. The Calvinists applying the word against sacred Images, are condemned long since by the Councel of Nice. See Images. They are ashamed of their translating, image, for idol. Heresies are the idols of the new Testament.

Images. They have God's own warrant. Their difference from idols. How they are adored, Their antiquity. Their fruit & commodity. Images of the B. Trinity & of Angels. Marriage a Sacrament Indissoluble, both parts living. & not lawful after divorce. Honoured by Christ's presence. Perfect & best without carnal copulation. See Chastity, Continency. Orders. The three holy Orders bound to chastity. Bigami excluded from holy Orders. All seven Orders have been from the Apostles' time. The institution and office of Deacons. Holy Orders is a Sacrament. instituted by Christ at his last supper. given by imposition of hands. by a Bishop, not by the people's voices. Oaths that are unlawful must not be kept.

P

Pardons or indulgences grounded upon Christ's own words. upon his example. upon his merits, and the mutual satisfaction of one for another. Practised by S. Paul. by the holy Bishops of the primitive Church. A pardon is only a remission of temporal punishment due for sin. Why pardons more common now than in old time. To whom this authority of pardoning pertaineth. All pardons are given in the virtue & name of Christ.

Parents. The duty toward them. Carnal parents & friends in what cases less esteemed. duty toward our spiritual parents. See. Priests.

Penance is perfect repentance, that is, not only amendment of life, but implying also confession, sorrowful contrition, and painful satisfaction. That the Greek μετάνοια & μετανοεῖν signify this penance S. John Baptist first, then Christ, & his Apostles preached penance. S. John Baptist's penance. Marie Magdalen's penance. The great penance in the primitive Church The old Canonical discipline. S. Paul's chastening of his body by penance. Temporal pain remaineth due, when the sin is remitted. Satisfaction or works of penance, ma. They derogate nothing from Christ's satisfaction, but are requisite because of the same. The body chastised by penance, is a grateful sacrifice to God. He prayeth that his faith shall not fail. The Church was builded upon him, & he receiveth the Primacy. Upon him, not upon his faith only or confession. Peter's manifold dignity & preeminence. S. Aug. our Apostle brought us the service in the Latin tongue. it was always in Latin throughout the west Church. Our people at their first conversion sang Alleluia, not, praise ye the Lord. Sursum corda, Kyrie eleison. See Mass. The people's private prayers in Latin. It is not necessary that they understand either public or private prayers. They understand them not being in the English tongue, neither are they any thing the more edified. Their intention and devotion is as great and acceptable in the one, as in the other. They are edified & take profit of the Priest's functions, though they neither hear nor see what he doth. They are taught the meaning of ceremonies and service, and do know them perfectly in all Cath. countries. Latin prayers are and may be translated. S. Paul's place falsely alleged against the Latin service or prayer explicated and that he speaketh of no such thing, much less against it. Preachers that preach well, must live accordingly. Catholic preachers in time of persecution, what is their comfort.

Predestination and reprobation declared They consist with free will. The mystery of predestination and reprobation is humbly to be reverenced, not curiously searched. No man must by occasion thereof be reachless and desperate in neglecting his salvation. ma. Good works must concur with God's predestination. What and how far we may & should learn herein. Priest. The name in all languages almost the same. heretically changed into Elder. The word Senior, Ancient, in the vulgar Latin translation, is always in the Greek, Presbyter, Priest. ma. His dignity. They are called Angels. They are coadjutors with, & under Christ, & work in his name. Their authority to remit sins. The Protestants carp at this authority, as the Jews did at Christ for the same. They (& not lay men) are the dispensers of Christ's mysteries. He that despiseth them, despiseth Christ. The honour of Priesthood. Preeminences before other. Hospitality and alms toward them. See Alms, Hospitality. The Protestants make it an odious & reproachful name. They avoid the word in their English translations of the new Testament. Their perpetual continency requisite. n. Marriage of Priests unlawful. contrary to the ancient Canons. to the Councel of Nice. None ever lawfully married after holy orders Paphnutius and the Nicene Councel concerning this matter. Married men being made Priests, must no more company with their wives: and that according to the example of the Apostles. according to the custom of the primitive Church. The Church may annex perpetual chastity to holy Orders. in the The forbidding of such persons to marry, is no condemnation of Marriage. Iovinian's old heresy could never induce any one Priest to marry. Vigilantius & his followers much like to the Protestants in this point. See Vow. Priests' crowns. Priests garments. Priests some properly so called, some unproperly. All Christians are no more Priests, than they are also Kings, that is, unproperly. Their spiritual hosts.

Christ'S Priesthood & the excellency thereof. A Priest as he is man, not as he is God. The Calvinists either Arrians or ignorant, in avouching the contrary ibi. His Priesthood eternal and how. in He concurreth still in all priestly actions, & is the principal worker. He is not the only Priest of the new Testament. Many Priests of the new Testament properly & peculiarly so called; and their Priesthood external, not only spiritual.

Princes, how and wherein to be obeyed. They may not usurp Ecclesiastical functions, They have no more right of supremacy in spiritual causes, than Heathen Princes. Christ and his Apostles charged with disobedience to Princes. Peter & John disobeyed the Magistrates commanding them not to preach in the name of Jesus. So must Catholic Preachers In things lawful not to obey them, is a mortal sin. Heretical tumults & disobedience against their Princes. Heresies against rule and superiority. The obedience of Catholics in all temporal causes. The deadly sins of Princes & superiors exempt not the subjects from their obedience, as the Wiclefists teach Princes themselves must obey & be subject in matters of faith & religion. All are under Peter & his successors. Their election & creation far inferior to God's institution of the spiritual Magistrate. The temporal Magistrate is called, an humane creature, & why, n. Rome called Babylon, & why. The Church there, never called Babylon. The Protestants sometime will not have Babylon to signify Rome. Paul speaketh of 2. Thes. shall be from this See of Rome. The Romans' devotion in visiting the Churches' & Martyrs' Relics in their Stations and Pilgrimages, is a sign of greater faith.

Sacraments, seven. See. Confirmation, Penance, Orders, Marriage, Extreme unction. Few and easy in respect of the Jews' Sacraments. More effectual & beneficial. External elements in the same not burdenous, not Iudaical, not Heathenish. Christ used external elements. what is to adore in spirit. S. Augustin falsely alleged for two Sacraments only. Grace is given in & by the Sacraments. They flowed out of Christ's side, & thence have their virtue. Contempt of the Sacraments damnable We may not the less esteem the Sacraments because of the ministers of them. The Sacraments first to be called for in sickness.

The B. Sacrament of the altar The great mystery, and institution thereof by our Saviour. The Catholics imitate Christ's institution thereof and the Apostles' tradition, the Protestants do not. The Protestants have taken away the B. Sacrament altogether. The real presence. The Gospel so plain for the real presence, that Beza controlleth it. Transubstantiation. Christ's miraculous & supernatural dealing with his body many ways, and that it is not to be measured by sense and natural reason. Faith necessary in this Sacrament. The Protestants judge thereof by sense and reason. They are like the gross Capharnaites. To ask, how it may be, is a Jewish word. Their scoffing at it. The real presence is by consecration. not by receiving, or in the receiving only. and The Heretics' arguments answered. and Adoration of the B. Sacrament. The honour thereof by solemn processions. by costly altars, chalices, ornaments. by clean corporals. by many other means. The Angels are present. It sanctifieth the altar. It is the supersubstantial and daily bread, specially desired in the Pater noster. The preeminence thereof above Manna. The wonderful effects thereof in the receivers. In what sense it is called sometime a figure. How it is both a figure and yet the thing itself. How it is called bread after the consecration. Whether S. Paul saying, the supper of our Lord, mean the B. Sacrament. Receiving in one kind. and The authority of scriptures and primitive Church for the same. It is indifferent, in one or both kinds, according to the Church's ordinance. The causes why the Church appointed one kind. The whole grace in one kind, and therefore the people not defrauded. The Heretics' arguments answered. and Priests saying Mass must receive both kinds. The purity and preparation required to the worthy receiving thereof. Confession of every mortal sin, necessary before we receive. Evil men receive the true body & blood, though unworthily. The danger and punishment of unworthy receiving. It is both a Sacrament and a Sacrifice & why.

The Sacrifice of the altar. and and n. n. Christ sacrificed his body & blood at his last supper. The sacrifice of the altar is the self same that was upon the Cross. Christ is often offered, & in many places. It is a commemorative sacrifice, yet a true sacrifice. It succeeded in the place of all the sacrifices of the old Law. Christ did not take away all sacrifice by the new Testament, but change them into a better. The external religion of the new Testament is principally in the Sacrifice of the altar. Christ's eternal priesthood consisteth in this sacrifice. The Fathers call it, the unbloody sacrifice. They call it the Mass. Why it is called the Eucharist. The general redemption upon the Cross particularly applied in this sacrifice. The Calvinists' argument against this sacrifice, maketh no less against the sacrifices of Moyses. Their argument against Christ's body often offered and in many places, was answered by the Fathers long ago. It is offered to God only. in the memory and honour of Saints. for the living and the dead. See Mass.

Sacrilege. Taking away of holy things or profaning them. In what cases holy Jewels and ornaments may be broken & otherwise employed.

Saints know our doings and our hearts, and hear our prayers. They are as Angels. They may be present with the living. at their own tombs & monuments. Praying to Saints & that they pray for us. Angels Protectors of Countries They are our mediators & advocates without any derogation to Christ. How Christ is our only Mediator & only Advocate. The conclusion of all prayers is Per Christum Dominum nostrum. The Protestants' arguments answered. Vigilantius their Father & founder of this heresy refuted by S. Hierom. How. S. Visions recorded in the Scriptures. Visions have no credit with Heretics, specially with the Protestants. Some have been rapt to see the state of the next life.

Extreme unction. See Extreme.

Vow, an act of sovereign worship. Never true religion without vows & votaries. The Protestants have abandoned all vows and votaries. Vow of monastical and religious life. Vow of virginity or chastity, lawful, possible &c. Young women may vow Religion. Our B. Lady vowed virginity. The daughters of Philip the Deacon were vowed virgins. The Apostles vowed poverty and professed the religious state of perfection. Breach of vows damnable. It is to break their first faith. It is to go after Satan. It is the highest kind of Sacrilege. It is worse than adultery. What virgins and widows the Apostle alloweth to marry. Iovinian for persuading Nuns to marry, is called of S. Augustin a monster: and of S. Hierom, he & his followers, Christian Epicures The Protestants call Iovinian's heresy, God's word. What vows are unlawful, and not to be kept.

Usury not to be used among Christians. Spiritual usury in the better sense.

Widowhood. This state more blessed than the state of Matrimony. Their continual prayer & continency. The example of holy Anne. S. Ambrose and S. Augustin wrote whole books in commendation of the state of widowhood. The Church's widows called Diaconissae, and their office. They must have had but one husband. The Calvinists most absurd exposition of these words, The husband of one wife. The Apostle forbiddeth not all young widows to vow. See Continency.

The word of God, is not only that which is written in the Scriptures. See Gospel. Tradition.

Works meritorious of life everlasting. No works of themselves, without faith and the grace of God, are meritorious. Such are the works that S. Paul excludeth from justification. We presume not upon our own works or merits, as of ourselves, but as of God's grace. The Protestants make no difference between Christian men's works done in grace, and the works of Jews and Pagans. They are injurious to God's grace, which maketh works meritorious. The Scriptures which they falsely allege, answered. We are justified by works also, and not by faith only. and See Faith. Good works before faith, though not meritorious, yet are preparatives to the first justification. That every man shall be rewarded according to his works, is a common phrase in Scripture. not according to faith only or lack of faith. All good works rewarded in heaven. Heaven is due for them according to God's justice. mar: They give great confidence before God. Works may be done in respect of reward. The three works of justice.
