JUDGES

THE PATH BETWEEN PRIDE AND SLOTH.

St. Augustine of Hippo (354–430) verse 11

Just as a person has to pick his way between fire and water so as to be neither burned nor drowned, so we should steer our way between the pinnacle of pride and the whirlpool of sloth, as it is written, turning neither to the right nor to the left. For there are some who, through fear of being carried up to the heights on the right, slip and are drowned on the left. Others . . . fear to be sucked in by the soft ease of sloth on the left and are ruined and destroyed by the ostentation of boasting on the other side, and [they] vanish into smoke and ashes.

St. Cyprian of Carthage (249) verse 12

Ch. 55 — Salvation Outside the Church

Nor let them think that the way of life or of salvation is still open to them, if they have refused to obey the bishops and priests, since in Deuteronomy the Lord God says, “And the man that will do presumptuously, and will not listen to the priest or judge, whoever he shall be in those days, that man shall die, and all the people shall hear and fear, and do no more presumptuously” [Dt 17:12]. God commanded those who did not obey his priests to be slain, and those who did not listen to his judges who were appointed at that time. And indeed they were slain with the sword, when the circumcision of the flesh was yet in force; but now that circumcision has begun to be of the spirit among God’s faithful servants, the proud and stubborn are slain with the sword of the Spirit, in that they are cast out of the Church. For they cannot live out of it, since the house of God is one, and there can be no salvation to any except in the Church.

THE KING

WALK THE KING’S HIGHWAY.

St. Basil the Great (c. 330–379) verse 20

You are a wayfarer, like to him who prayed, Direct my steps.[1] Give heed to yourself that you may swerve not from the path, that you decline neither to the right nor the left. Keep to the king’s highway. The architect should lay the firm foundation of faith which is Jesus Christ and let the builder look to his materials: not wood, nor hay nor stubble but gold, silver, precious stones.[2]
